Most Earl Greys use poor quality China base tea, which is like palming yourself off as landed gentry when all you own is a Barbour jacket. We use the finest Darjeeling from the foothills of the Himalayas and add zesty bergamot citrus from sunny Southern Italy, to create something altogether more elegant. The blue cornflowers? Well, they just look so pretty.

Louise the tea taster says

how does it taste?

The exotic, floral tones of Darjeeling tea are balanced with the zesty citrus taste of bergamot.

good if you're feeling

In need of refinement; one sip of this will leave you feeling posh.

How we like it

Drink it with a slice of lemon, no milk – that’s the way we like it, but each to their own. Same with the sugar.

Just cover one tea temple with boiling water and infuse for 3 minutes. Remove temple and top-up glass with iced water. Garnish with lemon.

Brew Time

  • tea temple - 1 per person. Infuse in boiling water. Brew for 3+ minutes.
  • loose tea - 2 rounded teaspoonfuls per person. Brew for 3+ minutes.

Whole leaves take longer to brew, but the little wait is definitely worth it.

The Perfect Grey

I often drink this black and the darjeeling is perfect for this.
The best Grey on the market and I have tried a few!”

“Pure heaven!”

Triffic, tip top tea!

* * * * * by • 22nd May 2007

“as someone that doesn't usually go in for earl grey (the smell of smoked fish just doesn't do it for me) I was surprised at the lovely musky smell that came from my tea temple. It smelt magic and so became the tea of the day. The beautiful little cornflowers were also a pleasant surprise and really added to the individuality of this tea. This is such good quality tea, after it's infused the tea temple is just bursting with rehydrated leaves (something I've never seen in another commercial brand). The taste was spectacular and my tea buddy and I both gave it a 5 out of 5 - it's a hit!”

The best and most refreashing Earl grey tea ever

* * * * * by Ann Rowe • 8th September 2014

“On my birthday this year we went to the green cafe in Ludlow i was so impressed with the tea i asked the waitress what make of tea it was, she said Teapigs which i had never heard of, she gave me two piramids to take home which i duely used and it tasted just as good as it did at the cafe so back i went and brought two packets and now do not drink any other tea, the taste and flavour is just perfect.”

Makes a beautiful cuppa!

“Really delicious blend and makes a great change from normal earl grey. It is one of the few teas that I really enjoy without milk. Highly recommended.”

Smell this!

* * * * * by Sharon • 8th November 2014

“I'd enjoyed other Tea Pigs before but hadn't tried the Earl Grey one. Whilst visiting a café in Sheffield I asked for Earl Grey and the man serving me immediately smiled and reached for the jar of temples...he insisted I had a sniff at the jar before he made me a cup! He said he was very impressed I'd asked for it and that he loved it. I have since bought my own and love it too! The temples are a joy to behold and the tea tastes amazing.”

* * * * * by Dan Neill • 27th January 2015

“My 8 eight year old Daughter bought me some for Christmas, mainly on the grounds that she loves pigs and I love tea. I have to say that this is quite probably the best earl grey I've had. i normally drink earl grey with milk but it's such a delicate and refreshing tea that adding milk to it seems to do it a disservice. After my wake up english breakfast at 5:45 each morning, to sit down in the office with a cup to plan my day is a quite perfect start.”

“This tea is amazing!
I bought a box on a trip to Bath and it was so amazing I made all of my friends try it and I ran out, so I ventured forth to the internet and ordered so much more tea!
Lovely wonderful lovely nice tasty lovely tea.

pretty tea with a subtle piquante

* * * * * by • 7th May 2009

“This is my work tea of choice at the moment, if I don't have time to make a cup, I just stick my nose in the packet and the smell alone is enought to perk me up. Not a lot of Earl Grey fans at work, but they all comment on the colour. It is a very pretty tea.”

This is the best Earl Grey EVER!!!

Earl grey as i always wanted

* * * * * by Joe whitelegge • 27th December 2011

“This tea has taken over my life.
It has been a staple in my diet for a long time I can't seem to function with out the aid this tea.
I first tried it after dabbling in normal earl grey teas many moons ago I was in my local deli and I asked for earl grey and I was give this temple of tranquility and peace my busy stressful day disappeared into this cup of swirling warmth. I asked the cashier and he brought me a pack over and I hastily threw money at him and rushed home to recreate this heaven and I have been feeding this addiction ever since. Thank you teapigs for giving something to keep me going through my stress days”

Super lovely!

My All Time Fav!!

* * * * * by • 8th March 2008

“I just love this tea, i think it is divine. It has a beautifull up lifting scent and a delicate balanced flavour. I usualy have it with a splash of milk and one sugar, but when feeling particularly saintly just a slice of lemon and both ways are lovely. Of all the T-pigs i've tried (and i've had most) I love this one!”

* * * * * by Darren Holloway • 13th May 2012

“Got a free 1 temple sample with my first teapigs order and I'll be definitely ordering some of this great tea after tasting it. Darjeeling can sometimes be too 'smokey' and Earl Grey too 'oily', but the blend and quality here is perfect. Great tea.”

New convert

“Before trying Teapigs I couldn't stand Earl Grey, but now I have seen the light and have been converted. Life is too short to drink bad tea!”

Simply the Best

* * * * * by Peter Jenks • 27th October 2011

“The Earl Grey from teapigs is everything earl grey tea should be, but mostly (increasingly) isn't. Discovering it has made my year....it is close to perfection.”

* * * * * by • 9th February 2010

“I love this tea - so tasty and invigorating. Ive even converted my fella to this Earl Grey. But my favourite is to mix some of the Earl Grey leave with some of the English Breakfast! The best wake up ever!”

Best Earl Grey

* * * * * by • 22nd September 2009

“I bought four tea temples from a deli yesterday in Skipton. Had never heard of teaigs before and was really drawn to the designs for each tea and the shape and material of the temples. The earl grey is the best i have ever had and all the others that i though were good compare nothing to this, i really like being able to see what is in the tea and not just dust in a bag. Have just placed an order for more earl grey and some other samples. Love the website and the ethics of teapigs. feel will be buying more soon.”

earl grey

* * * * * by • 7th May 2010

“the structure of the teabag and high quality tea leaves make this the very best EARL GRAY tea I have ever managed to buy. It certainly surpasses any of the major supermarket retailed brands and all of the top exclusive independent food store varieties in the UK.”

Earl Grey himself would drink teapigs Earl Grey.

* * * * * by • 25th February 2010

“Wow, and wow again. Truly the Roll Royce of earl grey. I have sampled many different brands of earl grey over the years and this is by far the best! The contents of the 'Temples' look of the finest quality and the taste is clean and subtle. Keep up the work!”

Beautiful Tea

* * * * * by Heidi Bradshaw • 21st February 2016

“I purchased a package of this tea at a well known supermarket yesterday. I'm a big fan of Earl/Lady Grey and thought I'd try this as I've never drank Darjeeling before. Brewed the tea, as suggested, and added a small amount of milk. Beautiful tea and very refreshing. I shall certainly buy this again.”

* * * * * by • 27th August 2010

“Please please do not be put of by the price of this tea! After all a strainer is cheap and loose leaf only costs 8p a cup, so Its not that pricey at all!

I promise you the first time you sip this tea you will never want to drink another kind of earl grey maybe even tea again because It is wonderful. A strong, punchy and fragrent tea that is perfet hot or iced and at anytime of the day.

So take the plunge my fellow tea piggers and try some of this tea, and you will never see tea in the same light again. Compared to the bland dust in other earl grey tea bags this is heaven.”

Excellent cup of tea

“My partner and I both love the Darjeeling Earl Grey. It is just the tonic for a Saturday morning after a hideous week at work. Brilliant blending by Tea Pigs!”

THE BEST Earl Grey!!!

* * * * * by • 15th June 2009

“I bought a pack of this tea from a lovely little shop//butchers/deli/cafe in Harrogate while on a weekend break with my family. The packaging and the little cornflowers did it for me! When I got home I couldn't wait to make a cuppa and I was not disappointed, in fact I was extremely pleased and now I have a cup every morning to start the day! I have run out so here I am to order some more because I bought some other brand from the supermarket the other day and I could not believe how awful it was compared to teapigs! I LOVE TEAPIGS!!! If you like your Earl Grey tea you will LOVE this one!”

“Yum sums this up. More please. Fragrant and totally de-lish.”

Darjeeling earl grey

Great Earl Grey

* * * * * by Laura • 15th February 2012

“The Best Earl Grey I have ever had. I have also tried chocolate and chai tea and loved them too. From now on I will definitely buy tea from Teapis only. Luckily I live 5 min drive from thier office so do not need to wait for delivery/”

* * * * * by • 29th August 2009

“Having never been a fan of tea, I was a tad dubious about the little single tea temple sachet that had been kindly included in my very first order. But in an attempt to ration out my rooibos creme caramel I decided to use this, the Darjeeling Earl Grey, instead. And I'm glad I did! The wonderfully subtle and light floral taste worked well with the citrussy bergamot, giving it a depth of flavour, but there was still that tea-taste we all know and (now, at least!) love. I had mine with a touch of sugar and a splash of milk, and it was delightful.

I'm so glad I found out about Teapigs - everything about it is fantastic. I will definitely be placing more orders with you.”

Best Early Grey I have ever had

* * * * * by • 2nd January 2011

“Easily the best cup of earl grey, amazing taste! Worth paying the little extra!”

Tea like you wouldn't believe could exist...

* * * * * by • 2nd August 2009

“I first came across this in a fab cafe in Langport, near where I live and I couldn't believe just how amazing it was!! I thought I was picky with my tea (teased by friends and family alike, I even used to carry my own teabags with me, although not when I went to a cafe, obviously!?), but now I realise the tea I drank was merely the crumbs under the table. This tea is the creme de la creme of earl grey teas!

It is full flavoured, clean and refreshing and I love the little blue cornflowers they pop in - hey, I am a girl after all!I It also amazes me how those leaves unfurl, especially in the tea temples. They start off a little clutch in the bottom of the temple, small and unassuming, but expand to fill the whole thing! AMAZING!! They are even potent enough to get two cups out of them; so you can pour another cup from the pot and let the divine experience last that little bit longer.

Thanks Teapigs, you are a god-send!”

How Amazing Are These

* * * * * by • 2nd January 2011

“Like the tea pig founders, I also am a Tea Addict - drinking all sorts of teas from all over the world. My partner thinks I have flipped, as I take delight in ordering tea no matter where we go. However no matter where I have drunk tea, has it ever beaten the wonderful taste and aroma of the earl gray tea pig! It quite literally is beautiful, as the cornflowers unfurl in the pig, and as the wonderful citrussy tea encapsulates your mouth! Amazing Amazing Amazing - And even the price is reasonable (in fact suprisingly so!!!!)”

Very fragrant!

* * * * - by • 23rd May 2009

“I received this as a free sample with one of my recent orders.

It's nice but not 'different' enough for my liking! (ie It seems too much like regular Earl Grey). I usually go for the more 'adventurous' teas, but I wouldn't not drink it again, given the chance.”

Darling Earl Grey!

* * * * - by Marina M • 3rd March 2012

“Definitely the best earl grey I've had! I even did a full taste test within my family and this was tops!
The only cons to it is that I find it rather weak, and not quite strong enough in the bergamot.
But the colour is exquisite!”

Great blend

* * * * - by Neil S • 30th October 2013

“Having just bought a Barbour jacket but not interested in pretending to own land, I appreciated the social commentary on the back of the packet.

The tea had just enough bergamot to give it a pleasant flavour, not like some Earl Greys which taste more like a herbal citrus blend.”

* * * * - by Jo Smith • 20th December 2012

“In my previous experiences with Earl Grey teas, the smell alone was enough to put me off. And my mum, who loves tea, absolutely detests anything Earl Grey...

Decided when ordering Christmas gifts from you to sneak in a sample pack of this tea for myself, out of curiosity. I mean, if it's just as vile as other Earl Grey's it's only 2 teabags, right? Well, vile it definitely is not! Another favourite, I've since ordered another pack to keep in the kitchen cupboard for when I fancy a change :)”

so pretty, so tasty!

* * * * - by • 24th October 2006

“This tea is fantastic, totally different to the average Earl Grey. I didn't know you could get darjeeling and earl grey together - it works.”

Two great black tea concepts combined

* * * - - by Tom Hawkins • 25th February 2016

“I love Darjeeling and I like the Earl Grey style so this was very interesting for me. I think it is not a bad attempt at bringing the two together, I can see they have had to weaken the bergamot a little so you can taste the distinctive darjeeling flavour. It is good but I think I will stick to the individual varieties from here on.”

* * - - - by Zoe • 31st July 2015

“Not as bad as the strong earl grey but still disappointing. Really wanted this earl grey to go above and beyond normal earl grey with the bergamot ect... But sadly it's weak on the bergamot side.”

Why ruin Darjeeling?!

* * - - - by Martyn Wood-Bevan • 4th January 2015

“Had some of this tea at a local cafe - described as Darjeeling-Earl Grey. Saw little point in using the Darjeeling as the Bergamot flavour dominated, and overshadowed anything that the Darjeeling could offer. You may say it is much better than using the cheap black Chinese day, but at least the Bergamot has some meaningful competition rather than total domination.
Not impressed...”

Not enough bergamot!

* * - - - by S Martin • 12th February 2014

“I don't like strong tea, so first up the 3mins brew time is way too much, I tried this and the result was very bitter.
I've been drinking a Rooiboos Earl Grey that has a great bergamot smell when you brew the tea and a light citrus flavour to the tea - sorry but tea pigs wasn't as good. No Bergamot for the nose or citrus taste. I don't like my Earl Grey with milk or lemon, just as it is, but even adding lemon didn't do the trick.”

Earl Grey

* * - - - by Becky • 3rd December 2011

“I was so looking forward to trying this tea. I'm a huge lover of Earl Grey and after reading all the glowing reviews I thought I was in for a treat.

I am however sadly disappointed. I find the tea to be very high in tannin which leaves my mouth feeling horrible and dry, I can't taste or smell any hint of bergamot which gives Earl Grey it's characteristic taste, and the tea has an oddly soapy flavour.

The only way I can make the tea palatable is to make it very weak.

Sorry Teapigs, but I'll be sticking to another brand of Earl Grey”

* - - - - by Annie • 13th September 2014

“I love Earl Grey solely because of bergamot flavour. Unfortunately that's not the case for this tea as there is next to nothing of bergamot smell or flavour. Big big disappointment!”

why so pricey

“way overpriced tea good graphics tho”
