REN Clean Skincare | Q&A

We love, love, love, supporting like-minded brands, and have been big fans of REN Clean Skincare for quite some time now. Some conventional skincare can in fact do more damage than good to your skin, and can also cause harm to the planet. REN, however, offer recylable packaging, refillable solutions and continue to work hard towards a waste-free future. Oh, and to top it all off, their products are non-toxic, clean and cruelty free - absolute winner!

We recently chatted to David, REN's Global Brand Ambassador, to find out more about this fab company and what a typical day at work is like for him. So, cuppas at the ready - let's have a read...

tell us a bit about REN and the ‘clean lifestyle’

REN Clean Skincare started in London in 1999 and we still believe today that you can make wonderfully indulgent, skin friendly, super effective products without coming at a cost to the planet. A clean lifestyle for us isn’t about saying ‘no’ to this and that, it’s about balance and challenging the status quo. Clean for us means ingredient sustainability, products that work in unity with the physiological functions of the skin (no compromising on results though) and of course, a commitment to be Zero Waste in all our packaging by 2021*.

In 1999 we pioneered less packaging, vegetable or soy inks only for printing, and offered a free post address so that we could recycle our client’s empty products – it was visionary 20 years ago, and we strive to deliver even more in the future. You’ll certainly see packaging and product innovation that you won’t find elsewhere. We’re shaping the new ideal of what luxury means. For products and brands to be future proof and to tap into this ‘new luxury’ their products must be made with no compromise to your skin or our planet. It can be done, so why not? We are very open about sharing our successes and failures, we want other brands to be inspired.  It’s not a competition, it’s the future of our planet. We don’t claim to be changing the world, but we are 100% committed to doing our part to future proof it for the next generation. I am also a huge nature lover, and my partner is a marine biologist, conservationist and author. REN Clean Skincare is a gorgeous product that we don’t have to feel guilty about using, yet also satisfies our vanity…  we’re both of the age where products must deliver!

tell us a bit more about your role and how did you get involved?

I am REN Clean Skincare’s Global Brand Ambassador and product expert. I work closely with new product development, support the global education team, and launch the products we create to press around the world. My first role (12 years ago) was handing out samples at Hampton Court Flower Show. I’d previously used the brand and had fallen in love instantly. There was just a way my skin responded that I’d never experienced before – that REN glow…  I knew right away that it was something different and I still 100% believe that to this day. After one weekend of successful product sampling I was offered a permanent role in their flagship store Liberty - and the rest is history. It’s testament to the sort of place REN Clean Skincare is to work at. Progression is encouraged and you can make the career you want - given you have determination and passion. I honestly don’t think I’ve had a solid job description in 10 years, but that’s kept me engaged, and the experiences that I’ve had across the range of the business has been invaluable. I’m also still close to the brand founders and ever so grateful for the way they brought me into the fold.  It’s felt more like family than colleagues. A very rare thing for the cosmetic industry.

what is a typical day like?

Working on quotes and content for press, attending marketing and product development meetings, trying various product samples from the lab, sorting out larger engagement pieces like masterclasses and global events, or just travelling! I get to travel across the UK and Overseas which can be punishing, but that’s on me. I find it hard to say no to opportunity and want to always be a part of the brand’s success.

what is your favourite product?

The question I get asked the most… the one we’re about to make next! But if you had to twist my arm I’d say the Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask or the Atlantic Kelp and Magnesium Body Wash*. One saves the face, the other saves the planet. We do need both in our bathroom cabinets!

*The packaging for Atlantic Kelp and Magnesium Body Wash is made from 100% recycled plastic, containing 20% reclaimed ocean plastic.
