Louise the tea taster says

For two hours every morning, for two weeks of the year, in the Chinese Fujian province where white tea is grown, the pluckers are in the fields at first light to catch the early morning shoots. These are traditionally withered naturally in the sun and sent to people who appreciate this kind of thing (i.e. teapigs). Possibly the most exclusive tea we stock.

How does it taste?

Refreshing, light and aromatic. Peaches and apricots. Very pure. We have chosen to bring you genuine white rather than green tea masquerading as white tea. If your white tea looks green in the cup, then it is green tea - watch out for fakes.

Good if you're feeling

impure of thought, word or deed. Forget the rosary and the Hail Marys – redeem yourself with a cup of this gorgeous white tea, crammed full of antioxidants.

Brew Time

    Brew for 3+ minutes
  • water_just_off_the_boil_80_degrees
Water just off the boil - 80 degrees
  • Tea temple - 1 per person. Brew for 3 mins, best with water at 80 degrees C. (If you don't have a fancy kettle or thermometer to hand, grabbing the kettle just before it boils will do the job!)
  • Loose tea - 2 rounded teaspoonfuls per person, infuse for 3+ minutes.

Whole leaves take longer to brew, but the little wait is definitely worth it.

How we like it

Simply pure; adding anything would be like scribbling comedy glasses on the Mona Lisa.

Give the Mona Lisa a monocle!

I know the recommendation is to have it pure, and to have it otherwise would be akin to drawing glasses on the Mona Lisa, but I find that completely pure, it doesn't taste of anything! It's just like drinking hot water! But with a single spoon of sugar, it makes the taste much more pleasant. Oddly, it even tastes as though it has milk when it doesn't!
It also makes a lovely honey colour in the pot!

Not that special

Having managed to appreciate green tea after several months, I was pursuaded to try the 'exclusive' Silver Tips White Tea, which was said to be lighter and more aromatic.

It's rotten.

Smells like mouldy weeds when brewing, has a yellow-green colour (which the box specifically stated it should not have), and tastes both bland and bitter. I noticed that when I left it to cool for a few minutes it became slightly more bearable, but the smell is repugnant. Pity.

Great Tea

I discovered the tea pigs white tea recently after switching to green tea a year ago....this has been a really great find.

I drink this with a slice of lemon and some wedges of fresh ginger. You get three really nice brews from one tea bag with no discernable reduction in taste....highly recommended!!
