Description

Popcorn Tea Japan Sourced from:
Japan

Louise the tea taster says

Back in the day when tea was too expensive for your average Japanese peasant, they’d mix it with toasted rice to make it go further. From such humble beginnings has grown a tea that, in today’s Japan, is celebrated in its own right as Genmaicha tea – or, to its friends, Popcorn tea. The British equivalent would probably be something like bubble and squeak, although obviously not recommended for use in teapots.

How does it taste?

Green tea with a popcorny, almost nutty undertone. “Sugar Puffs in a cup” – truly unique.

Good if you're feeling

in need of a treat. As indulgent as a trip to the movies, but without the violence and naughty language, this sweet green tea will lift your spirits.

  • 1 tea temple per person. Brew for 3 mins, best with water at 80 degrees C. (If you don't have a fancy kettle or thermometer to hand, grabbing the kettle just before it boils will do the trick!)

Whole leaves take longer to brew, but the little wait is definitely worth it

How we like it

Straight - this interesting flavour is great on its own.

Yummy in my tummy. :)

Something awfully more-ish about this tea. Great for this dreary british weather.

Lovely

Genmai is one of my favourite green teas and I'm always on the look out for different varieties. This is a fantastic example - warming and mellow and goes brilliantly with food.

Interesting that it's labelled as 'Popcorn tea' - I hope this will help introduce the wonders of genmaicha to people that otherwise wouldn't have stumbled on it.

Lovely Green Tea with Nice Taste (for once)

I bought a sample of this green tea and it is rather pleasant to drink. The colour is more yellow than subtle green, and has a nice nut like flavour unlike other green teas, however the leaf in the bag is whole and is in my opinion very good quality. The popcorn is deffinatley a compliment to the tea rather than just a novetly. I would reccommend this highly - would not expect any less from teapigs.

Grows On You!

This is my first teapigs order - I ordered the piglets pack! The popcorn tea being one of the ones I was most intregued with, I decided to try it first. The first couple of sips I took I disliked it, but as I drank deeper into the cup the texture and taste changed, subtly. This is a lovely tea, and the smell from the bag as it is brewing is gorgeous - I must admit it made me feel rather hungry!
