The teapigs' Ethical Scheme was set up to enable us to make a difference to the tea growing regions / communities we buy from. At the same time it also offers a personal insight into life on tea estates.
Our first project: Noel Orphanage, Gisenyi, Rwanda
Many people are surprised to hear that Rwanda produces some of the finest black teas known to tea tasters. Once you know that, it’s no surprise at all to then hear that teas from the Pfunda tea estate, based in the lush green hills of Rwanda make up 40% of our english breakfast tea.
Sadly, Rwanda is more likely to be remembered for a history that saw an estimated 800,000 people lose their lives and left many thousands of children orphaned.
The Pfunda Tea Estate sits near Gisenyi in the north west of Rwanda.

A large orphanage, home to 600 children, over the road from the tea estate. The tea estate generously provides annual support to the orphanage and we very much want to join with them and contribute to the ongoing financial requirements.
It costs just 49 pence a day to feed, clothe, shelter and educate each child in the orphanage. We'd like to make as large a contribution towards that as possible by various fund raising activities. We offer you the chance to contribute 49 pence when you place an order with us and for every contribution that you make, we'll match it.
As our business grows we plan to contribute further to the support of the Noel orphanage, Gisenyi.
If you would like to know more about the orphanage or make a contribution please email louise@teapigs.co.uk
