Pfunda Tea Estate, Rwanda
We have used tea from the Pfunda Estate to make our
english breakfast blend. Here is a little bit more about that estate.
The Pfunda Tea Estate was planted in the 70's. As tea estates go, this makes Pfunda a relatively young estate with the potential to carry on producing quality teas for years to come. Many of the worlds tea estates have tea bushes which are over 80 years old.
The estate rests on an area known as the 'Congo Nile Crest', it is balanced above lake Kivu and below the Nyiragongo volcano in Congo. The volcano last erupted in 2002 and can be seen glowing at night.
The tea at Pfunda grows between 1740m and 3100m, this is pretty high (Ben Nevis is a mere 1344 m high). The region is lush and green and the rich volcanic soil helps to generate one of the best teas in the world.

The estate provides valuable jobs for people in the local area, up to 2000 people work on the estate.
The estate also runs a co-operative for the farmers in the local area. 2563 farmers are members of this co-operative and supply tea to the estate. The estate will produce around 1.35 million kgs of tea this year. That may sound like a lot but in the world of tea manufacture this is very very small. The Pfunda Estate is concentrating on making the very finest of teas. Quality not quantity.
