Tea was reputedly discovered by a Chinese Emperor, sometime around 2700 BC, was made fashionable in Britain by a Portuguese princess, became so heavily taxed that a black market was born, only then to be used to encourage the working classes to go teetotal. Then there’s tea's part in building the British Empire and it’s influence on events in North America to consider.
If we were going to do the history of tea justice we’d have to create a website just for that, which would be really silly when you consider that an excellent one already exists. So if you want to know about the history of tea, the UK Tea Council’s excellent website is the place to go.
